Honoring Ancestors During Pitru Paksha: The Power of Mahalaya Tarpan and Shradh

Pitru Paksha is the time when we turn our mind towards our Pitrs, our ancestors. These 15 days come every year in Bhadrapada month Krishna Paksha. From the day after Ganapati Visarjan till Mahalaya Amavasya, we perform rituals like Shradh, Tarpan, Pind Daan, Til Daan, and chanting of Pitru Sukta.

This period is not just custom. It is given by our rishis, it is written in shastras. If we ignore it, then Pitrs feel restless, family faces Pitru Dosha. If we do it with shraddha, then Pitrs bless us, our family becomes peaceful, our work starts happening.

Pitru Paksha

What is Pitru Paksha

Pitru Paksha means “fortnight of ancestors.” These are 15 days when it is said that Pitrs come down near to earth. They expect their children, grandchildren, family to remember them, give them water, food, pind.

In Garuda Purana, Vishnu Bhagwan told that when Shradh is done, food reaches Pitrs in subtle form. In Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah told Yudhishthira that Shradh done properly uplifts ten generations of ancestors. So this is very deep.

Our elders used to say — “Pitru Tripti, Deva Tripti.” When Pitrs are satisfied, even Devatas become happy.

Why Pitru Paksha is Important

In our Sanatan Dharma, we say three debts every person has:

    • Dev Rina (debt to gods) – repaid by puja, yajna

    • Rishi Rina (debt to sages) – repaid by following dharma, gaining knowledge

    • Pitru Rina (debt to ancestors) – repaid by Shradh and Tarpan

Just like a tree needs water at its roots, family needs blessings from ancestors. If Pitrs are happy, tree will give flowers, fruits. If not, tree becomes weak. Same with family.

If Shradh is not done, Pitrs feel thirsty, hungry in subtle world. They remain restless. That causes doshas. Many times families face same problems again and again — marriage delay, no children, health issues, sudden losses. Many times it is because of Pitru Dosha.

Mahalaya Amavasya – Most Powerful Day

Pitru Paksha ends on Mahalaya Amavasya. This day is very strong for Pitru rituals. Even if you don’t know death tithi of your forefathers, you can do Mahalaya Shradh and Tarpan.

On this day, not only known Pitrs, but also forgotten ones, unclaimed ones, souls who have no one to remember them — all get benefit. That is why it is called Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

In my Guruji’s words, if you missed Shradh for some reason, at least do on Mahalaya Amavasya. Even one Tarpan with Til and water will give peace to Pitrs.

Main Rituals of Pitru Paksha

Shradh Puja

Shradh is the main ritual. Cooked food, rice balls (pind) with Til and ghee, water are offered with mantras. Panditji guides as per tithi. Food is also given to cow, crow, and Brahmin. Crows are believed messengers of Pitrs.

This puja ensures nourishment to Pitrs. They receive it in subtle world and give blessings.

Tarpan Seva

Tarpan means offering water. We take water, mix Til, put darbha grass, chant Pitru mantras, and offer. This quenches thirst of Pitrs. Especially on Mahalaya Amavasya, Tarpan is very strong.

Even those souls who are forgotten, or whose names are not remembered, get peace through Tarpan.

Pind Daan

In Pind Daan, rice balls are offered with Til and ghee. This symbolizes food for the departed. In Garuda Purana, it is written, without Pind Daan, soul cannot move higher. By doing this, Pitrs leave worldly attachments and move towards liberation.

That is why people go to Gaya, Prayagraj, Trimbakeshwar for Pind Daan.

Pitru Sukta Path

In Rigveda, Pitru Sukta mantras are given. When pandits chant these mantras, it connects directly with Pitrs. The vibration clears negative energy, ensures offerings reach properly. Family receives blessings.

Til Daan

Til is very sacred in Sanatan Dharma. Sesame removes sins, purifies, and protects. That is why Til is offered in water, in fire, and given as daan to Brahmins. Without Til, no Shradh is complete.

Pitru Dosha in Astrology

In Jyotish, Pitru Dosha is seen in horoscope when Pitrs are unsatisfied. It happens mostly when planets like Surya, Chandra, Rahu, Ketu are afflicted.

Signs of Pitru Dosha:

    • Marriage not happening, or broken marriages

    • Problems in having children

    • Sudden accidents, health issues

    • Financial problems, losses again and again

    • Family fights, no peace in home

Shastras say the best remedy is Shradh, Tarpan, Pind Daan in Pitru Paksha. Along with that, Pitru Sukta chanting and Til Daan. Many families have seen relief after doing these sevas.

Pitru Paksha Sevas

Who Should Perform These Sevas

    • Families who have Pitru Dosha in horoscope

    • People who lost parents, forefathers but could not do Shradh properly

    • Those who don’t know death tithi, can do Mahalaya Tarpan

    • Anyone who wishes to honor ancestors and take blessings

Shradh is not about big money or big show. Even if done simple way, with true faith, it reaches Pitrs.

Blessings of Performing Shradh

When Pitrs are happy, they give blessings. Health, wealth, children, peace, protection — all come from Pitru blessings.

I have seen people telling after Shradh, their problems slowly started going away. Marriage fixed, child born, business started improving. It is not some miracle; it is blessings of Pitrs.

Our elders used to say, Shradh done today gives fruit for future generations also. Just like farmer sows seeds now, crop comes later.

Story from Shastra

Let me share one story from Mahabharata. Karna, the great warrior, after death went to Pitru Loka. There he was given gold and jewels as food. He asked why I am not getting proper food? Then Pitrs told him, you gave daan of gold, silver, everything, but you never gave food and water to ancestors. That is why now you get only jewels. Karna then prayed, and Bhagwan gave him chance to come back to earth for 15 days to offer food and water to Pitrs. That period became Pitru Paksha.

This story shows, food and water to ancestors is most important.
